Freetrain Hydro 2 review
The hydration movement vest with room for two soft flasks.
The Hydro 2 keeps the central phone pocket and adds holders for two soft flasks on the front. It's the vest for long Sunday runs, marathon blocks and summer, when carrying water stops being optional.
Carrying water without a backpack
Soft flasks on the chest are the easiest way to drink on the move: you can reach them without breaking stride, and as they empty they collapse instead of sloshing. Spreading the weight across two flasks keeps the vest balanced left to right.
Compared with a handheld bottle, your hands stay free and your arm swing stays natural. Compared with a waist belt with bottles, there's far less bounce at the hips.
Phone and storage
The phone still lives in a central pocket, so you get the same easy screen access as the V2. With flasks in, it's a fuller front — on very short runs I'd still reach for the V2 instead.
Who should choose it over a full trail pack
Running hydration packs from brands like Salomon are built for mountain ultras with mandatory kit, jackets and bladders. If you run on roads and parks and need water and a phone rather than a full kit list, the Hydro 2 is lighter, simpler and cooler on your back.
What I like
- Two-flask capacity for long runs
- Phone stays central and usable
- Lighter and cooler than a backpack-style pack
Watch out for
- Overkill for a 5K
- Not a replacement for a trail-ultra pack with mandatory kit
Verdict
If your long run is creeping past an hour, or you train through summer, the Hydro 2 is the vest to own.
