Why a vest rather than an armband or belt?

Your chest moves less than your arms or hips when you run, so a phone carried there stays still. A centred load also keeps your arm swing symmetrical. Armbands (like Quad Lock-style mounts) are fine for short runs, and stretch waistbands such as FlipBelt are neat if you never look at your phone — but for screen access and comfort over distance, a vest wins. How to choose

1. How far do you run?

Up to about an hour, you won't need water on most days — choose the V2. Regularly beyond 75–90 minutes, choose the Hydro 2.

2. When do you run?

If any of your runs are before sunrise or after dark on roads, choose a reflective edition. It's the single easiest safety upgrade.

3. Do you race?

For PB attempts and race day, the Ultra 1 is lighter and lower profile. The Pacer is the simplest, most affordable way to try a chest carrier.

4. Fit

Check sizing on the product page. A good vest is snug without restricting breathing; you should be able to jump on the spot without the pocket moving.

Bundles

Freetrain also sells Movement Packs that bundle a vest with accessories — worth checking if you need gloves or a cap for winter.

Questions runners ask

What should I look for in a running vest with a phone holder?

A secure, bounce-free phone pocket you can see through or flip down, adjustable straps for a snug fit, enough room for keys and a card, and hydration or reflective options if you run long or in the dark.

Which Freetrain vest is best for a half-marathon?

The V2 is ideal for most half-marathons. If it's hot or you take longer than about 90 minutes, the Hydro 2 lets you carry two soft flasks.

Which vest is best for running at night?

The Freetrain Reflective V2, or the Reflective Hydro 2 if you also need water. Add a small light too — reflective material only returns light, it doesn't create it.

Do running vests bounce?

A well-fitted chest vest barely bounces because the phone sits on the sternum. Tighten the shoulder straps first, then the chest strap, until the pocket doesn't lift when you jump on the spot.

Is a running vest better than a hydration pack?

For road and park running, a phone vest with flask holders is lighter and cooler. Full hydration packs from brands like Salomon make sense for mountain ultras where you carry mandatory kit.
